Tiger soccer team erupts for 8-0 win in home opener
Getting goals from seven players, the No. 4-ranked Cowley College men’s soccer team gave its home fans plenty to cheer about in an 8-0 win over Trinidad State College in the Tigers’ home-opener, played Sunday in Arkansas City, KS.
Cowley (2-0) got two goals from sophomore Renan Syrio in the first six minutes of Sunday's contest and dominated the game from the start. The Tigers would get other first-half goals from Alberto de Miguel and Leonardo Leitao to take a 4-0 halftime lead.
"We started the game with a good pace and the right determination, but we then slowed down after the third goal and didn't finish the first half well," Cowley head coach Marcos Ribeiro said.
Cowley regrouped at halftime and got second-half goals from Yusei Suzaki, Hikaru Nakagawa, Holden Schaefer, and Hayato Yoshitake as they cruised to the 8-0 win.
"After halftime, the players returned with a different energy and performed very well," Ribeiro said. "It was good to see all the players getting minutes, which is crucial because we will face a tough season ahead and need everyone.
Along with the seven goal scorers, sophomore Kanta Ishii had three assists in the victory, and freshman goalkeeper Lukas Lowry did not face a shot on goal while recording his second straight shutout.
"I am happy with the team's overall performance and our start at home," Ribeiro said.
Cowley's game at Allen on Tuesday has been cancelled. The Tigers will not play again until Saturday, September 13, when they play at Seward Community College at 7 p.m. in Liberal, KS.
