In a battle of ranked teams, the No. 4-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team scored early and late in a 2-0 victory over the No. 14-ranked Barton Community College Cougars Wednesday night in Arkansas City.
With the victory, Cowley remains unbeaten at 6-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. Barton is now 5-3 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Cowley needed only 8:30 minutes to grab the lead as Joao Magalhaes scored on a loose ball in front of the Cougars' net.
The score would remain that way until just over one minute remaining as Cowley's Takeru Chiba scored off a counterattack to seal the victory. The goals by Magalhaes and Chiba were their first in a Tiger uniform.
Tiger goalkeeper Kamy Ndione faced only three shots on goal while recording his second straight shutout and fourth of the season.
"Hats off to our defensive line; they were concentrated for the whole 90 minutes and looked very sharp with their decision-making," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "I am very happy for João and Takeru. I am also proud of our players. I think we were very smart throughout the game in terms of finding the best solutions on the field. It was a very difficult game from a tactical standpoint, but our players interpreted the game plan very well."
Cowley will attempt to remain unbeaten when they play at Kansas City (3-0-2) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Devils are second in the conference behind the Tigers.
"We have another tough one against KCK," Vaz said. "They have been very good and are loaded with good players. We will need to be at our best to get a good result."
