Talented soccer duo signs with NCAA Division I schools

After starring for the Cowley College men's soccer team, sophomores Luis Rodrigues and Takeru Moriyama recently signed letters of intent to continue their playing careers at NCAA Division I schools.

Moriyama, who this past season was named the Jayhawk West Co-Player of the Year and a Second Team All-American, signed with the University of South Florida. Rodrigues, who was named the Jayhawk West Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team all-conference selection, signed with Western Illinois University.

The duo helped Cowley win a school-record 18 games in a row before losing at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Tyler, TX. Cowley won its second straight conference title by a whopping four games and defeated Coffeyville 3-1 to win the Plains District Championship.

"These two are the kind of players you wish would never leave the program," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "Their work ethic is unmatched."

Moriyama, who tied for third on the team with five assists, came to Cowley from Japan.

"I came here to not only play soccer, but also to learn how to speak English," Moriyama said. "I have improved in both areas and have come in contact with people from lots of different cultures. I had a great experience at Cowley. South Florida will be another good environment for me and is a good level of soccer. I hope by playing there I will be able to play professionally after I graduate."

Rodrigues, who was a co-captain and leader of the defense, will miss playing for the Tigers. However, he is also looking forward to playing at the DI level.

"Cowley is an amazing junior college, from the coaches to the facilities," Rodrigues said. "Cowley helped me achieve my dream of playing Division I soccer. Coming from a program that is used to winning, I hope to compete for conference and region titles at Western Illinois."
