Scoring 14 goals through its first two games of the season, the No. 15-ranked Cowley College men's soccer team is showing the tremendous depth of its squad. On Monday, the Tigers blasted Garden City 8-1 in Arkansas City to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Tigers got goals from five different players as they led Monday's game 5-0 at the end of the first half. Cowley would tack on three more goals over the final 45 minutes of play and had seven players score in the win.
"We had defenders, midfielders, and forwards scoring goals for us," Cowley head coach Ruy Vaz said. "This says a lot about the depth of this team."
Freshman Valentine Iheanyiogu was the lone Tiger to score two goals as he now has three goals through the first two games of the season.
"Valentine has a work ethic that is almost unmatched," Vaz said. "He is a student of the game and it is good to see his hard work pay off."
Other Cowley players to score in the 8-1 win were, Leonardo Palmieri, Andre Cavichione, Antonio Peruchi Marra, Adrian Gonzales, Murilo Ramos, and Takeru Moriyama.
"I was very impressed with not only the way we played, but the attitude we played with," Vaz said. "We played very aggressively and the guys are showing their grit and toughness."
Shuma Kawabe and Andre Luiten split time in goal for the Tigers and were rarely threatened as Felix Mesquita scored the lone goal of the game for Garden City after Cowley had built a 6-0 lead.
Cowley will play its third game in six days when they play at Dodge City Wednesday at 3 p.m. The game will be the first of the season for the Conquistadors.
"Dodge City plays a similar style to us and will have fresh legs," Vaz said. "This is what we live for, is playoff level competition."
