Coffeyville snaps Tigers’ win streak with an 84-67 win
Playing at conference foe Coffeyville Community College on Wednesday, the Cowley College men’s basketball team got out-scored by 15 points in the second half of an 84-67 road defeat.
The loss put an end to Cowley's three-game win streak and dropped the Tigers' record to 14-8 overall. The Tigers are now tied with Garden City for third place in the conference with a 9-7 record. Coffeyville (15-8) is just behind Cowley in the conference with a record of 9-8.
Cowley fell behind in Wednesday's game 17-7 before pulling within 37-35 at the end of the first half.
"You can't go on the road and dig yourself an early hole," Cowley head coach Donnie Jackson said.
Cowley trailed by only one point (52-51) following a three-pointer by Marcus Smith with 13:09 left to play, but a 12-0 run by the Red Ravens helped bust the game open. The Tigers got the deficit back down to eight (67-59), but that would be as close as they would get in the 17-point road defeat.
The Tigers were dominated on the boards, being out-rebounded 43-24, including 17-7 on the offensive glass.
"The game came down to our inability to finish possessions on both ends of the floor," Jackson said. "Too many missed layups by us and too many second-chance points for Coffeyville."
Freshman Roman Miller led Cowley with 20 points, marking his seventh game of 20-plus points on the season.
Freshman point guard Marcus Smith battled foul trouble while finishing with 12 points in 20 minutes, while sophomore Kyden Thompson added 12 points and eight assists.
"Kyden was a bright spot for the team. I thought he competed at a high level," Jackson said.
Coffeyville's Rashid Kuta led four Red Ravens in double figures as he finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tigers will return home to face Hutchinson in the team's Hall of Fame Game on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Blue Dragons, losers of seven games in a row, are 10-13 overall and 5-12 in the Jayhawk Conference.
Before Saturday's contest, the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2026 will be honored.
"There is no time for feeling sorry for ourselves," Jackson said. "We have a big game versus Hutch Saturday, and we have got to protect home court, especially on a special night with our Hall of Fame game."
