Reggie Scurry, a former NCAA Division I basketball player who started his collegiate career playing for Cowley College head coach Donnie Jackson at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa, is rejoining Coach Jackson as an assistant coach on the Tiger men's basketball team.
Scurry takes over for former Tiger assistant coach Roybell Baez, who recently accepted the head coaching position at Western Nebraska Community College.
"I am excited for Coach Baez to earn this opportunity to be a head coach," Jackson said. "We had a great three-year run together at Cowley, and I could not be more thrilled for him."
While playing for Jackson at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa, Scurry averaged a double-double as a sophomore, finishing with averages of 15.7 points and 10.2 rebounds during the 2016-17 season.
Scurry was named an NJCAA Division I All-America Third Team selection and All-Region 2 First Team. He also garnered NJCAA All-Tournament Team honors.
Jackson saw first-hand what kind of a competitor Scurry was and jumped at the opportunity to add him to his coaching staff.
"Reggie is hungry, hardworking, and loyal," Jackson said. "He has picked up great experience as a graduate assistant at Middle Tennessee and is eager to work and learn. He plans to hit the ground running and is excited to be here at Cowley."
Scurry transferred from NOC-Tonkawa to Missouri State University, where he played in 21 games, earning two starts, in his injury-shortened season. Scurry averaged 8.9 points and 4.2 rebounds on the season in 17.1 minutes per game. He ranked second on the team in field goal percentage at 50.3 percent and blocks with 19 while earning Missouri Valley Conference All-Bench Team honors.
Scurry transferred to Middle Tennessee State as a redshirt junior, where he started 31 of 32 games for the Blue Raiders. He averaged 11.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per outing and was dominant on the offensive glass with a team-high 95 offensive boards.
Scurry went on to start all 20 games in which he appeared in his final collegiate campaign, averaging 8.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting just shy of 60 percent from the field in 2019-20.
His 57.3 career field goal percentage ranks sixth all-time in the Middle Tennessee record book. The Augusta, Ga., native earned his bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee in May 2020 and served as a graduate assistant at the school before coming to Cowley.
"I am honored to join Cowley College as an assistant coach," Scurry said. "I am excited to work with our talented athletes and contribute to their growth both on and off the court. My goal is to help the team achieve new heights and foster a winning culture."
