Cowley falls behind early, can't recover in 76-64 loss at Coffeyville
February 27, 2018
Playing its final game of the regular season, the Cowley College men's basketball team got off to a rough start at Coffeyville and could not recover in a 76-64 loss on Monday. With the victory, the Red Ravens captured the Jayhawk Conference title and gave head coach Jay Herkelman his 600th career win.
"Congratulations to Coffeyville and coach Herkelman in winning the league and getting Jay his 600th win," Cowley head coach Tommy DeSalme said. "It is a testament to him and his program."
The Tigers, who were already locked into the No. 4-seed in the Region VI Playoffs, are now 19-11 overall and finish 16-10 in the conference. Coffeyville (26-4), winners of 14 games in a row, finishes one-game in front of Barton and Hutchinson for first place in the conference with a record of 22-4.
On Monday, Coffeyville scored the first 11 points of the game and led 25-8 with 7:25 left in the opening half. The Red Ravens' lead would grow to 39-18 at the end of the first half.
"We were back on our heels offensively and defensively and Coffeyville was big reason for that," DeSalme said. "I was really disappointed in our confidence in the first half."
Cowley scored more points in the first six minutes of the second half than they did in the entire first half and closed within 51-39 following a pair of free throws by sophomore Darnell Cowart with 13:32 left to play.
Unfortunately, Coffeyville got a three-pointer from Quawn Marshall and a basket by Keon Queen to stretch the lead back to 56-39. The run would extend to 18-6 as Coffeyville's lead ballooned to 69-45 after a basket by Cedric Roland with 6:20 remaining.
Again, Cowley fought back, this time using a 14-3 run to pull within 72-59 with just under two minutes left. However, four straight points by Coffeyville helped the Red Ravens hold on for the 12-point win.
"We answered the call and kept playing in the second half," DeSalme said. "It was a good experience to play in that type of atmosphere, now we have got to learn from it."
Jeremiah Starks and Darnell Cowart led Cowley with 14 points apiece, while freshman Brenden Van Dyke went 4-of-4 from the floor and finished with 13 points, three rebounds and two steals.
"Brenden was a bright spot with his energy," DeSalme said.
Marvin Johnson led Coffeyville with 23 points, while Cedric Roland added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. The Red Ravens out-scored Cowley 14-3 on second chance points and out-rebounded the Tigers 41-23.
Cowley will host Neosho County Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the First Round of the Region VI Tournament. The winner will advance to play Sunday at Hartman Arena in Park City, KS. Sunday's game time has not been determined.
The Panthers are 9-21 overall and finished in 12th place in the conference with a record of 7-19. However, Neosho split the two games against the Tigers during the regular season.
"Neosho is a talented team and beat us the last time we faced them," DeSalme said. "This is what you put all the work in for. We put ourselves in a good spot to host the game."
