Former Tiger great Tyrus McGee named Big 12 Rookie of the Week
January 23, 2012
Tyrus McGee, the third all-time leading scorer in Cowley College men's basketball history, is making the most out of his first season at Iowa State University as the junior guard was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week after averaging 18.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in a pair of Cyclone victories. McGee, who was 11-of-20 from three-point range in the two games, earned the award by a select panel of media covering the conference.
McGee broke his previous career highs in scoring in both of last week's contests as he poured in 17 points, was 5-of-9 from three-point range and grabbed a career-high nine boards in Iowa State's come-from-behind win over Oklahoma State. McGee hit a key three-pointer to tie the game at 68-68 with 0:20 seconds left. On the ensuing defensive possession, he stripped the ball off Markel Brown's leg to set up the Cyclones' buzzer-beating victory.
He followed that game with another stellar effort in a road win at Texas Tech, setting career highs in both points (20) and three-pointers (6).
He accomplished all of this while playing a combined 57 minutes without committing a turnover.
McGee is now averaging 9.4 points and 3.4 rebounds on the season. He is shooting 46.2 percent from three-point range (36-of-78) and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line (30-of-36). McGee's solid play has helped Iowa State to a record of 14-5 overall and 4-2 in the Big 12 Conference.
At Cowley, McGee led the Tigers to the Jayhawk East title as a freshman and averaged 20.1 points as a sophomore. His 1,194 career points rank behind only Antonio Dixon (1,256 points) and Del Heidebrecht (1,323 points) in the history of the Tiger basketball program.
