Tigers break out in 82-45 win over Fort Scott
January 22, 2004
Scoring more than 80 points for just the second time this season, the Cowley County Community College men's basketball team played its most complete game of the season in an 82-45 win over Fort Scott Community College Wednesday night at W.S. Scott Auditorium/Dan Kahler Court.
"This was our best game all year," Cowley head coach Randy Smithson said. "We finally played how I like to play."
The Tigers scored the first 10 points of the game, and led 18-2 after a lay-up by freshman Xavier Burnette with 12:50 left to play in the first half. Cowley's lead would grow to as many as 31 points (44-13) in the opening half, before settling for a 44-16 halftime lead.
The Greyhounds, who had more turnovers (18) than shots (16) in the first half, never got closer than 25 points of the Tigers in the second half.
The victory was a good way for Cowley to cap its three-game homestand. The Tigers went 2-1, with their lone defeat coming against Neosho County Community College Saturday, 80-77.
"That last loss stung us a little bit," Smithson said. "I think there was a conscious effort by our team to get better. Tonight was a step toward where we want to go. We seemed to play with a purpose on both ends of the court."
Cowley forced Fort Scott into 31 turnovers, while committing just 11 of its own. The Tigers also outshot the Greyhounds 47.7 percent (31-65) to 42.1 percent (16-38) from the floor.
Freshman Jasper McDuffus continued his solid play of late as he scored 15 of his season-high 20 points in the first half. McDuffus also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Sophomore guard Alex Elam had another big game as he finished with a game-high 21 points for the Tigers. In the past two games, Elam has scored 45 points, and connected on 11-15 three-point attempts.
"Alex is in a little groove right now," Smithson said.
Fellow sophomore Francis Cuyler came close to recording a triple double as he finished with 15 points, seven assists, and seven steals.
Rickey Phillips, a 6-0 sophomore guard, led Fort Scott with 14 points. The loss drops the Greyhounds' record to 10-9 overall and 3-4 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
The victory improves Cowley's record to 13-5 overall and 4-2 in the Jayhawk East. The Tigers will now prepare to play at Labette Community College Saturday at 8 p.m.
