Bullpen leads the way in doubleheader sweep at Allen
Getting dominant pitching from its bullpen, the Cowley College baseball team rallied to defeat Allen Community College in game two and sweep both games of a doubleheader on Thursday in Iola, KS. Cowley won the opener 15-6 before winning the nightcap 5-3.
The Tigers are now 28-15 overall and 18-4 in the Jayhawk Conference. Allen has dropped 12 games in a row to fall to 14-30 and 5-18 in the conference.
In game one, Cowley freshman Keaton Humphrey went the first four innings on the mound, allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out five and walking one. He left with the Tigers leading 5-4.
Fellow freshman Hudson Roberts doubled leading off the fifth inning and came around to score on a throwing error by Allen pitcher Doc Needham to increase Cowley's lead to 6-4. Quinn Groebl's two-run double later in the inning made the score 8-4.
The Tigers would tack on five more runs in the sixth inning to lead 13-4.
Jack Hamm followed Humphrey on the mound and did not allow a run, while striking out four and walking none in two innings of relief.
Roberts would double home two more in the seventh as he and Quinn Groebl went 4-for-4 with a combined seven runs batted in and five runs scored.
Allen would score a pair of runs off Tiger reliever Cameron Mock in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as Cowley won 15-6.
Sophomore third baseman Logan Smith added three hits, and the Tigers out-hit Allen 14-7.

The Red Devils struck early in game two on Kaden Wint's two-run homer off Keegan Robertson in the bottom of the first inning.
Jaco Doty started game two for Allen and was staked to a 3-0 lead.
Doty ran into trouble in the fourth inning and was relieved by Logan Page after allowing an RBI single by Easton Green. Page avoided further damage and then tossed a scoreless fifth inning as Allen led 3-1.
Cowley finally got to Page in the sixth inning as they got a pair of two-out run-scoring singles from Josiah Sems and Drake Fittro to tie the game at 3-3.
Robertson allowed six hits and three runs in 3 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out six and walked two.
Peyton Gosch followed with 2 2/3 scoreless innings and was followed by a 1-2-3 seventh inning from Hudsen Periman (1-0) and two scoreless innings of relief from Riley Lile. Cowley pitchers combined to strike out 15 Red Devil batters in game two.
The solid relief gave Cowley a chance to rally and the Tigers went in front 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning as Allen reliever Miller Tavaglione hit Jace Patton with a pitch and then allowed a single to Hudson Roberts, which advanced Patton to third. Logan Smith followed with a groundout which scored Patton with the go-ahead run.
Giving the Tigers an insurance run, Cowley catcher Creed Muirhead hit a solo home run in the ninth inning to increase the lead to 5-3. The homer was the first of the season for Muirhead.
The Tigers had 11 hits in game two and were led by Drake Fittro, Easton Green, Smith, and Muirhead's two hits apiece.
In the doubleheader, five Cowley relievers combined to allow only four hits and two runs in 8 2/3 innings, while striking out 13.
The teams will return to Ark City, where the four-game series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
