Tiger baseball team completes four-game sweep of Coffeyville
Improving its record to 9-1 in its last 10 games, the Cowley College baseball team completed a four-game sweep of Coffeyville Community College. After winning the first two games of the series in Ark City, the Tigers defeated the Red Ravens 10-3 and 11-6 on Saturday in Coffeyville.
Cowley (18-13) is in third place in the Jayhawk Conference with a record of 9-3. Coffeyville falls to 12-22 overall and 3-13 in the conference.
On Saturday, the Tigers rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win 10-3. A five-run sixth inning helped cap the victory.
First baseman Quinn Groebl had three of Cowley's 13 hits, while Cowley got home runs from Hudson Roberts and Josiah Sems.
Grady Hoke (3-2) went the first four innings and struck out seven to earn the win. Sophomore Jack Hamm followed with three scoreless innings of relief to lower his earned run average to 1.74.
Game two saw the Tigers score six runs in the second inning to stake starting pitcher Chance Acord to the early lead. Acord (2-3) allowed six hits and four runs in 4 2/3 innings before Lucas Weaver, Carter Rose, and Riley Lile followed on the mound. Lile struck out two and pitched two spotless innings of relief.
Cowley third baseman Logan Smith was a double shy of hitting for the cycle while driving in four runs, and Sems continued to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Cowley will play at No. 11-ranked Hutchinson on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Blue Dragons are 29-5 and currently in first place in the Jayhawk West. The teams were involved in a slugfest on March 17 in Ark City, with the Tigers rallying for a 21-20 win.
