Seminole doubles up Cowley, 20-10, in Tigers' final non-conference tilt
Battling control issues in the team’s final non-conference game, the Cowley College baseball team had seven pitchers combine for 12 walks in a 20-10 loss at Seminole State College on Tuesday in Seminole, OK.
Cowley finishes an up-and-down non-conference slate with a record of 8-9.
"It was a hard day on the mound for us," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said. "You walk that many guys, and that is a recipe for losing, especially when you are playing a good team. We hope we learned some things about our team during this non-conference schedule and continue to grow."
On Tuesday, Seminole scored eight runs in the second inning on only three hits as the Trojans benefited from four walks and a hit batter while getting a three-run homer from Brayden Harpole and a three-run double by Hutch Russell.
A two-run homer by Seminole's Carter Sterling increased the Trojans' lead to 13-2 after three innings of play.
Trailing 15-2, Cowley got a three-run homer from Hudson Roberts and a two-run single by Drake Fittro in a seven-run fifth inning to pull within 15-9.
After the teams traded runs in the seventh, Seminole scored four runs in the eighth without a hit. All four of the Trojans' runs came off three walks and three hit batters as they went on to the run-rule win.
Hudson Roberts went 2-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Easton Green went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a run batted in.
Sophomore Drake Fittro continues to swing a hot bat, going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in out of the leadoff spot.
Peyton Gosch started on the mound for Cowley, and Jake Hobbs (0-1) followed. Sophomore Keagan Robertson was the lone Tiger to pitch more than one inning, allowing four hits and three runs in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Robertson struck out four and walked none.
Cesar Valera (1-0), the second of eight pitchers used by Seminole, earned the win. The top-three batters in the Trojans' lineup combined to reach base 11 times, while combining for 11 runs batted in and nine runs scored.
Cowley will now turn its focus to conference play when they host Fort Scott in a doubleheader on Thursday at 1 p.m. The Greyhounds are 14-7 overall, but were swept in a four-game series against Kansas City to open the conference season.
"It is time for us to start playing more consistent baseball," Burroughs said. "We are excited to open the conference season and want to represent our program well in front of the home fans."
