In a battle of two of the top teams in the region, the No. 3-ranked Cowley College baseball team fell to No. 19-ranked Barton Community College by a score of 10-0 on Tuesday in Great Bend, KS.
Barton (32-8) has defeated the Tigers twice in the past two weeks, while Cowley (31-8) has gone 8-0 in the other games played around the Barton contests.
The shutout was the third of the season for the Tigers, who lost at No. 18-ranked McLennan 1-0 on February 14 and at ninth-ranked Johnson County on March 20.
"We did not have a very good day offensively and made too many mistakes," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said. "We did not match the level of play needed when playing against a good team."
With Barton leading 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Cougars' Hunter Alvord delivered the big blow by belting a grand slam off Cowley starting pitcher Ty Parker, increasing Barton's lead to 8-0. Parker allowed six hits and eight runs in 3 2/3 innings. Mark Hoffman, Cameron Mock, Jack Hamm, and Chance Acord came in to pitch in relief for the Tigers.
Cowley was only out-hit eight to six but stranded nine runners on base. Kade Sheldon and Dax McCaskill had two hits apiece in the loss.
Cowley will attempt to start a new winning streak when they host a doubleheader against Highland on Thursday. The Scotties (7-36) have lost 11 games in a row and are 3-17 in the Jayhawk Conference.
"The objective is to win two games on Thursday and get back on track," Burroughs said.
Cowley remains tied with Johnson County for first place in the Jayhawk East with a record of 20-4.
