Rose State College
The No. 11-ranked Cowley College baseball team belted six home runs and pounded out 36 hits in a sweep of a doubleheader at Rose State College Tuesday in Midwest City, OK.
The Tigers improve to 26-5 on the season. Rose State is now 9-22.
Cowley hit four home runs in the 20-9 run-rule win of Tuesday's opening game. David Herring hit a two-run homer and Andrew Williams delivered a two-run single in a five-run second inning for the Tigers.
Felix Chenier-Rondeau added a grand-slam in a six-run fourth inning that increased Cowley's lead to 13-2. The Tigers would then get a three-run homer from Blake Mitchell and a two-run shot by Janson Reeder as they scored seven more runs in the fifth inning to lead 20-2. Rose State scored seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it was not enough to keep the game from being called due to run-rule.
Seven Tigers had at least two hits in the victory. Jordan Brewer went the first two innings on the mound for the Tigers, while Cameron Allen followed with two scoreless innings to go along with three strikeouts.
In game two, five Cowley pitchers combined to toss a one-hitter. Oliver Laroque (1-0) went the first three innings and struck out four, and Rose State's lone hit came off Logan Kimbro in the bottom of the seventh inning.
"We did a good job on the mound outside of that one inning in the first game," Cowley head coach Darren Burroughs said.
Leading 8-1, the Tigers scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning to win 18-1. Trey DeGarmo hit a three-run homer in the 10-run seventh inning. The homer was the first of the season for DeGarmo.
"It was good to see guys continue to work and stay within their approach at the plate and the results showed," Burroughs said.
Blake Robertson hit a grand slam in the second inning and Bryce Madron, Gus Freeman, and Trey DeGarmo had three hits apiece. Robertson is one of four Tigers with at least 45 runs batted in on the season.
"The guys are doing a good job of using the whole field and driving in runs," Burroughs said.
Cowley will return home to play three games against Seward Community College. The Tigers will host the Saints (17-16) in one game beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday before playing a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
"Seward has got a good club," Burroughs said. "We want to see continued improvement and competitiveness. It should be a fun weekend."
