Tigers avenge earlier loss with 11-8 win over Seminole State College
April 3, 2019
The No. 15-ranked Cowley College baseball team pounded out 15 hits in an 11-8 win over rival Seminole State College Tuesday in Arkansas City.
The Tigers, winners of 11 games in a row, had previously lost to the Trojans 11-4 prior to starting its current win streak.
"It was good to see the way we performed and to see we are getting better from the last time we faced them," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said.
Cowley is now 23-6 on the season, while Seminole State falls to 23-9.
Making his second start of the season, freshman Hunter O'Toole allowed a leadoff triple to Seminole State's Josh Lewis, who would come around to score on a one-out sacrifice fly to centerfield by Brayden Rodden to give the Trojans the early 1-0 lead. However, O'Toole avoided further damage by striking out Joseph Craig to strand runners at second and third.
Cowley promptly got the run back, and more, against Seminole's Shawn Harper, who entered Tuesday's game with a 12.83 ERA. The Tigers teed off on Harper for five runs in the bottom of the first.
Austin Neal replaced O'Toole on the mound with runners at first and second and only one out in the top of the second inning and retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Kevin Dickey then replaced Harper (1-1) on the mound to start the bottom of the second inning and did not make it out of the inning before allowing three more runs. A two-run single by Carson Sader chased Dickey from the game and put the Tigers in front 8-1.
Neal would pitch a scoreless third inning before giving way to Josh Bortka to start the fourth. Bortka and Reid Frase failed to retire any of the four batters they faced as Seminole scored four runs in the inning to pull within 8-5.
Adam White (2-0) came on in relief and did a good job of stabilizing things for the Tigers by not allowing a run in his two innings of work, while Ethan Swanson tossed a scoreless sixth inning.
After the Trojans' Tucker Dunlap two-run triple off Miguel Obeso in a three-run seventh inning cut Cowley's lead to 10-8, Cowley got one of the runs back when Cody Milligan doubled home Tyler Halstead in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 11-8. Milligan would finish the game 3-for-3 with three runs scored out of the leadoff spot and raised his average to .408 on the season.
Jared Wilson would come on to toss a scoreless eighth inning and Ryan Westerhoff pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Tiger first baseman Daniel DeSimone went 4-for-5 with a RBI, and Carson Sader continued his recent hot stretch at the plate by going 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Sader is 9-for-16 with five runs batted in over his past four games
The Tigers will return to conference play when they open a four-game series against Allen Community College by playing a doubleheader Thursday in Arkansas City beginning at 1 p.m. The Red Devils are 10-12 overall and 6-10 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
