Tigers sweep Highland to make it 10 wins in a row
April 1, 2019
The Cowley College baseball team continued its trend of solid pitching and defense, combined with timely hitting, to sweep a doubleheader at Highland Community College on Sunday. The Tigers won 6-1 and 9-3 to run its win streak to 10 games in a row.
Cowley has out-scored its opponents 99-25 during its current winning streak.
"We are about pitching and defense," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. "That's a recipe for a lot of wins."
The Tigers are now 22-6 overall and 11-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division, while Highland falls to 2-26 overall and 0-16 in the conference. Cowley trails only Johnson County (10-0) in the Jayhawk East standings.
In Sunday's opener, Cowley got a two-run single from freshman Corbin Lill in a three-run first inning. Cade Stephens would later hit a home run in a two-run third inning to increase the Tigers' lead to 5-0.
Logan Steenstra would add a RBI single in the seventh and finished with two hits as did Stephens and Lill.
That would be more than enough run support for sophomore Brannon Jordan, who pitched a season-high five innings and allowed only three hits and one run. Jordan struck out nine and walked two to improve his record to 3-1 on the season.
Freshman Miguel Obeso was nearly untouchable in his two innings of relief, retiring all six batters he faced with five of the outs coming via strikeout.
"Those two guys on the mound were really good," Burroughs said. "They overmatched their hitters."
Highland's Noah McClanahan (0-3) went the first six innings and allowed six hits and only two earned runs in the defeat.
Highland committed five errors in the nightcap and Cowley pounded out 14 hits in the 9-3 victory.
Cowley used five pitchers in game two. Jack Carneal started game two for the Tigers and allowed one run in two innings of work.
Grant Wilson, Jared Wilson, and Ryan Westerhoff combined for 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, while Ethan Swanson (1-0) allowed one run in 2 1/3 innings to pick up the win.
Stephens went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Carson Sader went 3-for-5 with a run batted in. Stephens finished with five hits in Sunday's doubleheader.
"Cade has made a couple minor adjustments with his swing that have been really beneficial for him," Burroughs said.
Austin Gottula (0-3) lasted only two innings on the mound for Highland and was tagged with the loss.
Cowley will return home to face Seminole State College Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Trojans defeated the Tigers 11-4 just before Cowley started its current 10-game winning streak.
"I hope we are eager to get that taste out of our mouth from the last time we played them," Burroughs said. "We will see what kind of grit we have."
