Tigers blast Highland to run win streak to eight in a row
March 29, 2019
The Cowley College baseball team continued its winning ways with a couple of easy wins over Highland Community College Thursday in Arkansas City. The Tigers won the opener 9-1 before run-ruling the Scotties 14-4 in the nightcap.
Cowley, winners of eight games in a row, improves its record to 20-6 overall and 9-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Highland's season long struggles continue as they are now 2-24 overall and 0-14 in the conference.
In game one, Cowley sophomore catcher Cody Milligan homered leading off the bottom of the first inning and Cowley scored four runs on five hits.
Daniel DeSimone would then lead off the bottom of the third inning with his team-leading sixth home run to increase the Tigers' lead to 5-0.
Highland got the run back in the top of the fourth as Dalton Burt doubled off Cowley starter Cole Larsen, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jason Gonzalez.
Leading 5-1, Milligan doubled leading off the bottom of the fourth and scored on a single by Carson Sader, who went 4-for-4 in the win. Sader, who entered the game with only three hits on the season, was playing in place of injured outfielder Grady Davenport, who is leading the Tigers in batting average (.412), doubles (12) and RBIs (29).
"With Grady (Davenport) out it opens it up for others to step up," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. "Carson made some adjustments with his swing and is starting to settle in."
DeSimone would add a two-run double in a three-run sixth inning for the Tigers and finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Larsen struck out the side in the first inning and carried on that momentum to strike out a season-high 14 batters in the complete game victory. Larsen allowed only four hits and walked just one as he improved his record to 4-1 on the season.
"Cole did that with his "B" game stuff," Burroughs said. "That tells you what kind of a competitor he is. He pitched on moxy and grit."
In game two, Cowley found themselves trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before erupting for 14 runs over the next three innings.
Milligan hit a three-run triple in a four-run fifth inning and he then capped a five-run seventh inning for the Tigers and ended the game due to run-rule by blasting a two-run homer.
"He set the day for us from start to finish," Burroughs said.
Milligan finished 2-for-4 with five runs batted in and three runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Milligan is now batting .407 with four home runs and 25 RBIs.
Blaze Brothers hit a three-run double in a five-run sixth inning and now has seven doubles on the season.
Andrew Roach earned the win as he allowed one earned run in 4 2/3 innings pitched. Roach struck out nine and walked only one as he evened his record at 2-2.
Jared Wilson followed Roach on the mound with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief and freshman Miguel Obeso came on to strike out the only two batters he faced.
After holding the Tigers scoreless for the first four innings, Highland's Justin Rieschick ended up allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings.
The teams will wrap up their four-game series by playing a doubleheader at Highland Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
