Tiger baseball team sweeps four-game series against Labette
March 25, 2019
The Cowley College baseball team scored 46 runs in a four-game sweep of Labette Community College to improve its record to 17-6 overall and 7-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
Sophomore Cole Larsen started the first game of Thursday's doubleheader at Labette and set the tone for the series. Larsen (3-1) struck out 10 batters over six innings and did not allow an earned run in the 5-1 win.
Three walks by Labette starting pitcher Adam Rodriguez in the top of the third inning helped Cowley score a pair of runs.
The Tigers would plate two more runs in the top of the sixth inning as Tyler Halstead doubled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Blaze Brothers before Grady Davenport singled home Cody Milligan with Cowley's fourth run of the game.
After Labette pulled within 4-1 by scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, Tiger first baseman Daniel DeSimone put a cap on the 5-1 win by launching a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.
Sophomore Ryan Westerhoff pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to finish off the 5-1 win.
Cowley would then use the long ball to defeat Labette 17-5 in game two of the series. Milligan hit his first two home runs of the season in the victory, while Grady Davenport hit his second home run of the year and DeSimone belted his team-leading fifth homer.
Davenport and Brothers drove in four runs apiece. Davenport leads the Tigers with 26 RBIs, while Brothers raised his average to .396.
Andrew Roach went the first 3 1/3 innings on the mound and allowed four runs. Reid Frase relieved Roach after a two-run homer by Labette's Rustin Postier brought the Cardinals within 10-4. Frase retired all five batters he faced to even his record at 1-1.
Cowley would need only five innings to defeat Labette 13-0 in Sunday's opener. Sophomore Brannon Jordan (B.J.) continued his return to health with another dominating, short stint on the mound. Jordan (2-1) went the first three innings, striking out six and allowing only one hit.
"B.J. and Cole were really good and set the tone for us in games one and three," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said.
Freshman Hunter O'Toole preserved the shutout by allowing only one baserunner over the final two innings of play.
Cowley hit three triples in the win and got a two-run homer from Logan Steenstra as they cruised to the victory.
Halstead went 2-for-2 with a triple and four RBIs, while Parker Dunn went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
The Cardinals committed seven errors in the final game of the series. Cowley scored five runs on only two hits in the bottom of the eighth inning as they turned a 6-4 game into an 11-4 win.
Davenport went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and DeSimone went 2-for-4 with a RBI.
After hitting only four home runs through the first 19 games of the season, the Tigers blasted six home runs in the four-game series with Labette.
"I hope it's a sign of things to come," Burroughs said.
Kaid Karnes started on the mound for Cowley and allowed only one hit in 3 1/3 innings. Miguel Obeso earned the win despite allowing three runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Sophomore Jared Wilson finished off the game by retiring all seven batters he faced to go along with four strikeouts.
The Cardinals are now 5-15 overall and 0-12 in the Jayhawk East.
