Tiger baseball team remains unbeaten at home
March 11, 2019
The Cowley College baseball team continued its solid play at home by winning a pair of games over Coffeyville Sunday in Arkansas City. The Tigers scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of game one to win 8-6 and then had five pitchers combine on a 3-0 win of game two.
With the wins, Cowley won three of the four games in the opening conference series for both teams. The Tigers, who are now 6-0 at home, are 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division. Coffeyville falls to 8-9 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
In Sunday's opener, Cowley sophomore Cole Larsen struck out nine batters through the first five innings as the game was tied 2-2. However, Coffeyville got a three-run triple from Noah Wallace in the top of the sixth as the Red Ravens scored four runs to lead 6-2.
The Tigers answered back with six runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to five hits, two walks and a hit batter in the inning. Cody Milligan and Daniel DeSimone each hit two-run singles in the six-run sixth to give Cowley an 8-6 lead.
Ryan Westerhoff came on in relief of Larsen to pitch the seventh and allowed the first two runners to reach base before retiring the next three batters to preserve the win.
Larsen struck out 10 and walked one to improve his record to 2-1 on the season.
Freshmen George Specht and Tyler Halstead each went 3-for-3 and combined for three runs scored and two runs batted in.
Matthew Hunt worked into the sixth for Coffeyville and allowed nine hits and three runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched, while Raymond Farrell allowed three runs on three hits in only 2/3 innings as he was saddled with the loss.
In game two, sophomore pitcher Brannon Jordan started for Cowley and tossed a scoreless first inning before being followed on the mound by freshman Hunter O'Toole, who kept the game scoreless heading to the bottom of the sixth.
Cowley broke the scoreless tie without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the sixth as Corbin Lill was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a fielders' choice bunt by Milligan, moved to third on a walk by Grady Davenport, and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by DeSimone.
Tiger reliever Ethan Swanson got Coffeyville's Jorge Ortiz to ground out with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and Cowley scored two runs on three walks and an error in the bottom of the eighth to lead 3-0.
Westerhoff would then toss a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his second save of the day and third of the season.
Jordan, who had been limited to only 4 2/3 innings pitched on the season, made a successful return to the mound. The Tiger coaches had predetermined that Jordan only pitch one inning.
"It was good to see B.J. back out there," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. "We wanted to be careful with him, but also get him back into his routine of starting."
O'Toole allowed only four hits in five scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out five and walked only one while improving his record to 2-0 on the season.
"Pitching was the story of the game," Burroughs said. "I was proud of our pitchers; they came to the rescue."
Cowley was scheduled to play Tuesday at Seminole (OK) State College but the teams moved the game to Monday night at 7 p.m. at the University of Central Oklahoma's baseball field in Edmond, OK. The Trojans are 14-4 on the season.
