Tiger baseball team drops a pair of games at Eastern Oklahoma State College
February 22, 2019
Eastern Oklahoma State College rallied from a 6-0 deficit in the second game of a doubleheader against the No. 6-ranked Cowley College baseball team Thursday in Wilburton, OK, to sweep the two games by scores of 9-2 and 7-6.
Sophomore Cole Larsen (1-1) started the opener for Cowley and allowed only a solo home run by Eastern Oklahoma's Kyle Simms through the first three innings. However, Larsen hit Cody Muncy with a pitch leading off the bottom of the fourth inning and then allowed four straight hits and four runs before being relieved by Jack Carneal with the Tigers trailing 5-2 and runners at first and third and nobody out.
Carneal walked in a run and allowed a two-run single by Jarrett Gable in 2/3 innings pitched. Josh Bortka replaced Carneal on the mound and allowed a RBI single by Chris Herb before getting Reed Shepherd to fly out with the bases loaded to end the eight-run inning.
Tiger freshman Blaze Brothers singled and scored in the first and third innings and finished with two of Cowley's six hits. Sophomore Parker Dunn added two hits out of the cleanup spot of the batting order, while fellow sophomore Grady Davenport went 1-for-3 with two RBIs batting out of the three hole.
The four through seven batters in the Mountaineers' lineup combined to go 7-of-14 with eight RBIs and four runs scored.
Eastern Oklahoma's Jacob Womack (2-2) earned the win by going the distance on the mound. Womack allowed six hits in seven innings, while striking out four and walking two.
Freshmen pitchers Grant Wilson and Reid Frase were bright spots in the defeat as they each tossed a scoreless inning of relief.
Sophomore Andrew Roach earned a no-decision in game two despite leaving the game with a 6-0 lead. Roach tossed five scoreless innings and allowed only two hits while striking out seven.
Three Tiger pitchers combined to allow four runs in the bottom of the sixth as the Mountaineers crept within 6-4.
Ethan Swanson then worked around a pair of walks and a hit batter to strand the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers would not be so fortunate in the bottom of the eighth as the Mountaineers tied the game by scoring two runs off Ryan Westerhoff (0-1) thanks to a pair of doubles, a hit batter, and a passed ball.
Cowley would put runners at first and second with nobody out in the top of the ninth, but were unable to score.
The Mountaineers' Jarrett Gable then led off the bottom of the ninth with a single off Westerhoff, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored the winning run on a single by Chris Herb.
Eastern Oklahoma out-hit Cowley 10-5 and were led by Gable's four hits.
Tiger first baseman Daniel DeSimone went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while third baseman George Specht went 1-for-3 with three runs scored.
Koty Frank started on the mound for Eastern Oklahoma and allowed four runs in five innings, while Jon Ward (1-0) earned the win by tossing two scoreless innings of relief as the Mountaineers improved its record to 6-5.
The Tigers, 5-4 on the season, will return home to play three games against Marshalltown (IA) Community College. The teams will play a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. and then a single, nine-inning game Monday at noon.
