The No. 6-ranked Cowley College baseball team continued its tour of Texas by splitting a pair of games at Paris (TX) Junior College. The Tigers lost to Paris by a score of 10-6 on Friday before coming from behind to defeat the Dragons 5-4 in a weather shortened game on Saturday.
Cowley is now 3-2 on the season, while Paris is 2-8.
On Friday, The Tigers spotted Cowley sophomore Brannon Jordan with an early 2-0 lead before the Dragons were able to chase Jordan (0-1) from the mound with a three-run third inning.
Paris added two runs in the fourth and five more in the seventh as they built a 10-2 lead. The Tigers continued to battle and scored four runs in its final at bat but it was too little too late.
All four Tiger pitchers that saw action in the game were scored upon, while the Dragons' Daxton Tinker (2-1) allowed only five hits and one earned run in five innings of work.
Sophomore catcher Cody Milligan led the Tigers at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run batted in. Grady Davenport and Tyler Halstead added two hits apiece.
The Tigers again found themselves trailing Saturday's game by a score of 4-0 after Paris scored four runs off Cowley starting pitcher Kaid Karnes in Karnes 2 2/3 innings on the mound. However, Miguel Obeso followed Karnes on the mound with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. Obeso (1-0) struck out six and allowed only two baserunners.
"Miguel dominated the game," Burroughs said.
Cowley scored a run in the top of the fifth inning thanks to a pair of errors by the Dragons and then scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to go in front by a score of 5-4. Tyler Halstead's two-run double scored George Specht and Blaze Brothers, with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
Paris' Trevor Rugg, who had three of the Dragons' six hits, doubled off Tiger reliever Grant Wilson leading off the bottom of the sixth inning before Carson Orton relieved Wilson on the mound.
Milligan caught Rugg stealing third for the first out of the inning and Orton struck out the next two batters to preserve the win as the game was called after six innings due to the weather.
The third and final game of the series was postponed.
"Wanting to focus on the positives, we kept grinding and did not quit," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said.
Halstead led the Tigers at the plate by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while sophomore transfer Daniel DeSimone went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Sophomore right fielder Grady Davenport also had some good at bats and went 3-for-9 with a double in the two games.
Four Cowley pitchers combined to strike out 14 batters in six innings, while Paris starting pitcher Zach Norris struck out 10 and allowed only one unearned run in five innings. Jack Englemann (0-1) allowed two runs in 2/3 innings pitched and was saddled with the loss.
