Tiger baseball team takes over all-conference and all-region list
May 16, 2018
One day after having its season come to an end in the championship game of the Central District Region VI Tournament, the No. 5-ranked Cowley College baseball team had 10 players named all-conference and seven more named all-region.
The Tigers captured its second straight Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division title and finished the 2018 season with a record of 45-11.
"I am proud of these guys," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. "They just had one bad day to finish, but it doesn't take away from the great years they had."
Leading the way for the Tigers was freshman outfielder Alex Peterson being named the Jayhawk East Most Valuable Player and the Freshman of the Year, while Cowley freshman Andrew Roach was named the Jayhawk East Pitcher of the Year.
Peterson broke Cowley's school-record for triples in a season (8) and finished only eight runs batted in shy of Garrett Benge's school-record of 96 RBIs. Along with leading the Tigers in triples and RBIs, Peterson also led Cowley in hits (97), doubles (16), stolen bases (23), on base percentage (.525), and slugging percentage (.691).
"I had a front row seat and enjoyed watching him play," Burroughs said.
Roach went 6-2 with a 3.94 earned run average. The right-hander led the team with four complete games, and was second on the staff in innings pitched (64). He struck out 65 and walked only eight.
Both Peterson and Roach were named First Team all-conference performers, while Peterson was named a First Team all-region selection and Roach was named Second Team all-region.
Other Cowley First Team all-conference selections were, sophomore catcher Dalton Dinkel (.400 average, six home runs, 50 RBIs), sophomore centerfielder Kea'von Edwards (.372 average, 12 home runs, 58 RBIs), sophomore second baseman Devin Beard (.390 average, five home runs, 49 RBIs), freshman third baseman Cross Factor (.374 average, nine home runs, 66 RBIs), and freshman pitcher Cole Larsen (6-2, 1.40 ERA).
Both Beard and Larsen joined Peterson as First Team all-region selections, while Dinkel, Factor, and Edwards joined Roach as Second Team all-region selections.
Cowley sophomore Kevin Rolon (.312 average, five home runs, 28 RBIs) was named an honorable mention all-conference selection, as were freshmen pitchers Ryan Westerhoff (6-0, 2.82 ERA) and Brannon Jordan (8-1, 3.33 ERA).
