Larsen shines in Tigers' 6-1 win over Hutchinson
May 13, 2018
Led by freshman Cole Larsen taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning, the top-seeded and No. 8-ranked Cowley College baseball team defeated eighth-seeded Hutchinson 6-1 Friday in the Region VI/Central District Tournament played Friday at Wichita's Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Cowley, winners of 10 games in a row, will play again Saturday at 7 p.m. when they take on the winner of the fifth-seeded Neosho County vs. Kansas City game that was to be played late Friday. The Tigers are now 43-9 overall, while Hutchinson drops to 36-21.
Cowley got on the board first when Cross Factor tripled into the right centerfield gap and scored on an error on the throw in from the outfield with one out in the bottom of the second inning.
Later in the inning Kevin Rolon scored on a single by first baseman Maison Stites to put Cowley on top by a score of 2-0.
The Tigers busted the game open when second baseman Devin Beard hit a three-run bases clearing triple and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ke'von Edwards to increase their lead to 6-0 after four innings of play.
Making just his fifth start, Larsen continued to impress as he struck out 10 and walked only one in the complete game win. The victory improves Larsen's record to 6-1 on the season.
The only run he allowed came on a solo homer by Julian Rip that broke up his no-hit bid with one out in the sixth inning.
"Cole was definitely the story of the game," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. "If you are going to win an eight-team tournament you will need to have a start like this."
Hutchinson's Mike Brown (5-4) was saddled with the loss as he allowed six hits and six runs in five innings of work.
Beard led the way at the plate for the Tigers by going 2-for-5 with a stolen base and three RBIs.
