Tiger pitchers overpower Butler in 5-1 win

Six Cowley College pitchers teamed up to allow only five hits, while striking out 12 batters in a 5-1 win at Butler Community College on Wednesday.
Cowley, winners of five games in a row, is now 23-15 overall. Butler is now 19-20 on the season.
Playing under the lights, the Tigers manufactured a couple of runs in the top of the third inning and added two more runs in the fourth inning to lead 4-0. Beau Bowen started on the mound and tossed two scoreless innings, and Brent Burroughs put zeroes up in his two innings of relief.
Butler's lone run came off Josh Collier in the bottom of the fifth inning. Cowley capped the scoring with a run in the eighth.
Tiger relievers Lane Trudo (four strikeouts), Clark Roberts (one strikeout), and Bryan McClellan (three strikeouts) combined to allow only one hit, while striking out eight in four scoreless innings of relief.
"Those three guys were really overpowering and outstanding on the night," Cowley assistant coach Darren Burroughs said.
Bowen (1-0) did not allow a hit in two innings pitched as he earned his first win of the season. Curt Lanham took the loss for Butler, allowing six hits and four earned runs in five innings pitched.
Sophomore Dalton Piecukonis had a big game out of the leadoff spot by going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a couple of stolen bases. Storm Marlar went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI groundouts.
Cowley will now prepare to host Johnson County in an important four-game series. The teams will play doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tigers (20-4 Jayhawk East) are currently two games in front of the Cavaliers (18-6) with 12 conference games remaining.
"It's always fun to have a competitive series," Darren Burroughs said. "We are looking forward to this type of atmosphere.
