Former Tiger Travis Hughes called up to the big leagues
September 23, 2004
Travis Hughes, a member of Cowley County Community College's back-to-back national championship baseball teams in 1997 and 1998, had his contract purchased by the Texas Rangers prior to the club's game vs. the Oakland A's Wednesday.
"We're excited for him," Cowley head coach Dave Burroughs said. "For them to call him up in the middle of a pennant race shows they obviously have a lot of interest in him."
Texas' 5-3 win over Oakland on Wednesday moved the Rangers to within three games of first place in the American League West with 11 games left to play.
Hughes, 26, has spent his entire seven-year pro career in the Rangers organization. This season, he went 3-6 with a 3.73 earned run average in 40 relief appearances with Double A Frisco, and 1-2 with a 5.26 ERA in 13 relief outings for the Class AAA Oklahoma RedHawks after being promoted in late July.
Overall, Hughes had 90 strikeouts in 88 1/3 innings with Oklahoma and Frisco. The 6-5 235-pound right-hander's fast ball has been clocked at 99 miles per hour on the radar gun. He was the Rangers' 19th round selection in the 1997 June draft.
Hughes becomes the third Cowley baseball player to suit up for a major league team this season, with the other two being Travis Hafner of the Cleveland Indians and Junior Spivey of the Milwaukee Brewers.
"This is a good thing for everybody involved," Burroughs said. "It speaks well for our program and the type of players we have here."
