Tigers battle the elements while competing at the Grizzly Gold
On a weekend when the weather threw everything at the Cowley College track and field teams but the kitchen sink, the Tigers still had a productive meet while competing in the Grizzly Gold on Friday and Saturday in El Dorado, KS.
Running his first 3,000-meter steeplechase event of the season, standout sophomore Esteban Boisseau was just shy of Daniel Maina's 20-year-old school record. Boisseau had an 11-second personal best (9:01.61) and is currently ranked second in the nation in the event.
Fellow sophomore Cooper Leonard had a big personal best in the shot put (50-4 ¾) and placed 10th, while Alexis Realland turned in a top 15 all-time mark in the 1,500-meter run.
On the women's side, Cowley freshman Aailyah Treat had an impressive performance in the 100-meter hurdles, and Kennedy Khamvongsa had a personal best in the long jump by over a foot. Zuzana Bokova also competed well, running a two-second personal best in the 800 meters, and Erika Wiese set a personal best in the 100-meter hurdles.
"The weather wasn't what we asked for, but it is still important to learn how to compete to the best of your ability regardless of the conditions," Cowley head coach Cameron Rieth said.
The Tiger track and field teams will compete at the North Texas Relays on Friday and Saturday in Denton, TX.
"It is important to learn that we can still make progress in our events, without always hitting a personal best," Rieth said.
