All-American women’s basketball player to be inducted into the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame
Montia (Johnson) Storey had a decorated career at Cowley College, becoming just the eighth player in the women's basketball program's history to receive NJCAA All-American recognition. The women’s basketball standout will be recognized for her accomplishments by being inducted into the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, February 7.
Storey was born in Elgin, Illinois, and raised in Sycamore, Illinois. She began playing basketball in sixth grade and joined the high school varsity team as a sophomore, while starting every game throughout her high school career. Storey was named First-Team All-Conference each year and helped lead her team to the best record in school history during her senior season.
Cowley College head women's basketball coach Todd Clark recruited Montia out of high school in 2011.
"She was pretty raw when she came here, but we knew she was an athletic kid," Clark said.
Storey saw Cowley as a place where she could grow, be challenged, and find opportunities to become the player and person she wanted to be.
After averaging only 4.4 points and 5.3 rebounds as a freshman, Storey averaged a double-double during the 2012-2013 basketball season, as she finished the year averaging 11.9 points and 10.1 rebounds. Her stellar play earned her Honorable Mention All-American Honors and helped Cowley to a 29-5 overall record and a 16-2 mark in the Jayhawk Conference Eastern Division.
"She developed into a good offensive player and always played extremely hard and with great energy," Clark said.
Storey shot a team-high 50.2 percent from the floor en route to scoring a team-best 405 points on the season.
"Accountability was a major theme in my development," Storey said. "I had teachers and coaches who were consistently honest with me, pushed me to work hard, and held me to a high standard. My bond with my teammates, the experiences we shared, and the sisterhood we built played a significant role in my journey. Coach Clark and Coach (Katrina) Colwell pushed us relentlessly, both on and off the court. They brought out the best in us and shaped us as competitors and individuals."
After Cowley, she played two seasons of basketball at Kent State University (OH) in NCAA Division I. As a junior, she played in all 30 games, starting in all but nine of them. She averaged 9.0 points and 7.1 rebounds, leading the team in both categories. She also led the team in field-goal percentage, making 48% of her shots, and finished the season with six double-doubles.
As a senior, she averaged 6.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game while shooting a team-best 55.3 percent from the floor.
"It was nice to see her continue to improve after she left Cowley," Clark said.
She earned a degree in Educational Studies with a minor in Athletic Coaching.
She and her husband, Mike, have been married for seven years, and together they started an AAU basketball girls' program in Cincinnati, OH, for grades K–1, 6th, and 8th. The couple has two children, Michael and Messiah, with another baby due in June.
Being inducted into the Tiger Athletic Hall of Fame has filled Storey with a range of emotions.
"I am truly honored. This program shaped me—not only as an athlete but also as a person," Storey said. "The community has always been honest with me, loved me, and pushed me to grow. I owe much of who I am to Coach Clark. His impact shaped my character, work ethic, and life far beyond the court. Being recognized by the place and the people who helped build me means everything."
