30th annual Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Golf Tourney raises money for scholarships
In honor of former Cowley College golfer Brian Groves, the 30th annual Tiger Skins/Brian Groves Memorial Golf Tournament was held Saturday, August 2, at Ark City Golf & Fitness.
Brian Groves (Class of 1998) was a member of the Tiger golf team before moving on to Southwestern College in Winfield. He was tragically killed in a one-vehicle accident in 2002.
Honoring Groves' memory, the team of Seth Graves, Ryan Williams, Jeff Sampson, and Shawn Hollard finished first in the Champ Flight of the golf tournament.
The team of Mike Loewe, Adam Davis, Deb Nittler, and Randy Nittler placed first in the A Flight, and the team of Todd Clark, Cadon Clark, Micha Jump, and Jason Jump placed first in the B Flight.
K.C. Crandall received the Male Longest Drive Award, Deb Nittler won the Female Longest Drive, Travor Harris won the longest putt, and Alan Rademacher won the Closest to the Pin. There were 20 teams and 37 hole sponsors at the tournament. The Cowley College Spirit Squad and Tigerette Danceline members assisted with the event.
"We had another successful Brian Groves Memorial/Tiger Skins Golf Tournament. Special thanks to all community members, Tiger Booster Club members, and our great Cowley coaching staff who contributed," Cowley College athletic director Jeff Fluty said. "It's always a highlight on the calendar. Special thanks to the Mike Groves family for the scholarship opportunity granted to a fortunate student-athlete every year of the tournament in honor of Brian Groves."
This year's recipient of the Brian Groves Memorial Scholarship was sophomore softball team member Taverli Tennant.
An awards ceremony and silent auction followed the golf tournament.
