Cowley College places eighth in Daktronics Cup standings
With one national championship, two national runner-up finishes, and several top-20 performances, Cowley College was recently recognized for its athletic success by finishing eighth in the Daktronics NATYCAA/Ron Case Cup standings. More than 200 community colleges figured in the scoring.
Iowa Western placed first in the Daktronics Cup for the fourth straight year, followed by Iowa Central Community College, Barton Community College, College of DuPage, and New Mexico Junior College. Salt Lake Community College and Odessa Community College finished just ahead of the Tigers.
Cowley was led by its undefeated volleyball team, which captured a second straight NJCAA Division II championship, and its men's soccer and Lady Tiger tennis teams, which brought home NJCAA Division I runner-up finishes. Men's tennis nearly repeated as national champions before placing fifth at the NJCAA Division I national championships.
Other sports to do well on the national stage were men's and women's cross country (eighth), women's soccer (quarterfinals), men's basketball (Elite 8), outdoor women's track and field (17th), indoor women's track and field (19th), wrestling (23rd), and men's indoor track and field (28th).
The Cowley softball and baseball programs also fared well, with the Tiger softball team (39-14) capturing the conference title and the Tiger baseball team (44-11) finishing second in the conference. While the Lady Tiger basketball team won over 20 games (21-10).
The Cowley College Tigerette dance team also did well as they clinched second place in the nation for Hip Hop and fourth place for Pom at the national competition in Orlando, FL.
