In just his seventh season as head coach at his alma mater, Cowley College men's soccer head coach Ruy Vaz earned his 100th career victory in a 3-1 win on Wednesday at Kansas City Kansas Community College.
Vaz has the No. 4-ranked Tigers at 7-1-1 overall and atop the Jayhawk Conference standings with a record of 5-0-1. Wednesday's game completed the initially scheduled contest on September 21, which was halted due to weather, with Kansas City leading 1-0 with 29:35 remaining.
It took the Tigers just more than three minutes into Wednesday's resumed contest to tie the game at 1-1 following a goal by Joao Magalhaes. Inaki Lambarri assisted on the goal by Magalhaes.
Cowley took the lead on a goal by Kanta Ishii with 19 minutes left. Renan Syrio, who assisted on the goal by Ishii, then sealed the victory by scoring his third goal of the season with three minutes left. Hayata Kobayashi's first assist of the season was a big one as he found Syrio with the game-clinching goal.
"I am proud of the boys for being very focused and concentrated," Vaz said. "We knew that we needed to be aggressive right off the bat, and they did it well. It will be good for our players to realize how strong they can be."
Vaz is now 100-16-6 as head coach of the Tiger men's soccer team.
"One hundred wins is a great accomplishment because it means that Cowley men's soccer and Cowley athletics have amassed many wins in the past six years, thus being amongst the top soccer programs in the country," Vaz said. "It also means that we have created the right culture in which we can get the best out of players in the short period of time we have with them. We want to keep going for more."
Cowley will return home to face Garden City on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Arkansas City. The Broncbusters (5-3-3) are 1-3-2 in the Jayhawk Conference.
